This photograph shows a building referred to on early Dundee insurance plans as Meadow House, which stands on Meadowside between Panmure Street to the south (and right) and Meadow Street to the north.

In 1896, it was home to the Dundee Warehousing Co., and the Equitable Fire & Accident Offices, which were both managed by W. F. Soutar, who are listed in the Dundee Directory as jute merchants. William F. Soutar lived at Annfield in Carnoustie.

This photograph shows city dignitaries in formal dress or ermine robes, taking part in a parade. The pillars of the High School, formerly the Seminaries, can be seen in the background.

The flat tower of the David Bryce designed Royal Evchange building can be clearly seen. This tower was meant to be higher and very ornate. Unfortunately, a miscalculation in building the foundations on the marshy ground resulted in the building being unable to take the weight.

The statue was unveiled by the Duke of Connaught after he opened the Victoria Hospital for Incurables. There was a civic lunch at the Albert Institute before the Duke left by train at 4.15pm.
